Endarteritis obli-terans and endophlebitis in cases of gastric ulcers

Endarteritis obli-terans and endophlebitis in cases of gastric ulcers

Acta Med Scand 131(2): 164-179

A distinction is made between the small arterioles, the middle-sized arteries and the large arteries. The first present some degree of tur-gescence of their cells. The middle-sized arterioles acquire an embryonic property in their collagen and elastic connective tissue the fundamental intercellular substance becomes active and productive; it gets more easily impregnated with histolog-ical stains; it proliferates while the muscular cells of the media transform themselves into a sort of connective tissue which is badly delimited; their nuclei are round, ovoid or polymorphic. The complete closure of the lumen of the artery is the final result. In the large arteries the obliterating process is essentially marked by a proliferation of the connective tissue under the epithelium and in the media. The elastic internal lamina, however., forms a barrier that more effectively limits the other layers of the artery. The vein has the same characteristics as the artery in endophlebitis; however, this process occurs less frequently. One may observe the progressive transformation of the muscular into connective tissue cells. There is a parallel proliferation of the connective tissue.
