Epizootiology of Trypanosoma cruzi in southwestern North America. V: Host parasite specificity between Trypanosoma cruzi and Triatominae

Investigations indicate that strains of Trypanosoma cruzi in nature are adapted to strains of Triatominae species in the same geographical area. Using a N American strain of T. cruzi it was demonstrated that Triatoma protracta bugs from N America will support a much greater number of parasites in their intestinal tracts than will Triatoma infestans from S America; the reciprocal was also found to occur. The passage of N American strains of T. cruzi through S American Triatominae vectors did not increase the virulence of the trypanosomes in white rats by any detectable amount.
