Experimental infection of mice and guinea pigs by parenteral inoculation and by natural entries. I. Experiments on mice with anthrax and other septicemia producers

Zeitschr Hyg U Infektionskr 106(1): 96-112

Anthrax cultures consisting of bacilli only generally did not infect guinea pigs or mice when ingested or inhaled. Sporulated cultures infected readily when inhaled but frequently failed even when large doses were administered by ingestion. Rubbing of spores into the intact skin easily caused infection; but bacilli usually failed to infect. Of the natural portals of entry, theskin appeared to be most susceptible, the lungs slightly less, and the alimentary tract considerably less so. Pathogenicity by these portals of entry in general runs parallel with that shown by parenteral injection. The great susceptibility of the skin to anthrax infection was emphasized by the fact that a number of other septicemia-pro-ducing organisms did not infect readily in this way, though several caused infection when large doses were used. Shortly after inhalation of anthrax spores, the organism could be cultivated from the blood and internal organs. When anthrax bacilli or any of the non-spore-forming septicemia-producers were used, they did not appear in the blood.
