Effects of cocaine, epinephrine, and KC1 were tested on human subjects to determine relation of the itching response to pain on the one hand and anesthesia on the other. Itch responses were measured, following injection of various concentrations of these solutions, as the period of duration of sensation. The extent of anesthesia was determined as the number of times a tactile response was elicited following stimuli of various intensities. Concentration of epinephrine, cocaine, and K necessary to produce an itching sensation was intermediate between the amounts necessary to produce pain and that necessary to produce complete anesthesia.
