Journal American Medicine Assoc 112(16): 1549-1556

Report of deaths of fetuses after the 5th month is required by the state law in Illinois. In a series of 17,728 infants delivered in the Lying-in Hospital, 402 were stillborn, 371 died within 10 days. Of this number, 6.3% had not reached term, but accounted for 59% of the mortality. In only 57% could a cause of death be found as a definite pathologic state. In live born infants, malformations, intracranial hemorrhages and anoxemia were the most frequent causes of death, in the stillborn anoxemia, malformations and intracranial hemorrhages were the causes. Complications as toxemia and placenta praevia occurred in 45.7 of all fetal deaths. Version and extraction and cesarean section were the methods of delivery having greatest mortality rates.
