Abstract
Earlier studies have shown that there is great variation in the rapidity with which tordon herbicide (4-amino-3,5,8-trichloropicolinic acid) decomposes in the soil. Soil sterilization almost completely inhibited its decomposition, thus indicating that it is largely dependent on microbe activity. These studies indicate that nature of the microbe population, moisture as a percentage of water holding capacity and temperature were the most important controlling factors. Soil pH and percentage clay in the soil had little influence. The herbicide itself is not a significant source of energy for the microorganisms and decomposition rather closely followed rate of decomposition of the soil's organic matter.
