Presents current recommendations for fertilizing flue-cured tobacco adopted by representatives of the N. C, S. C, Va., Ga., and Fla. Stations and the U. S. Dept. Agric. Rates of 800-1200 lbs. per acre of 2-9 to 10-6 to 12 fertilizer, applied in bands 3-4 in. to the sides of row or thoroughly mixed with soil in the furrow before bedding, are recommended. Nitrogen in fertilizer should be 1/3 from high grade organic material, 1/3 nitrate, and 1/3 other standard inorganic source. Fertilizer should carry 2% MgO, 2% Cl, 6% CaO and, where such deficiency exists, 1/4 lb. boron. For tobacco plant beds, 1 lb. per sq. yd. of 6-9-3 fertilizer with 1/4 N from nitrates, 1/4 N from natural organics, and 1/2 N from other inorganic sources, and practically free from Cl, is recommended. A small amt. of Cl may cause plant injury.
