Fluorescence characteristics of purines, pyrimidines, and their derivatives: measurement of guanine in nucleic acid hydrolyzates

Fluorescence spectrometry has been applied to the purines and pyrimidines revealing that many of them do emit appreciable fluorescence. The following quantum efficiencies were observed: thymine, 0.15%; adenine, 0.20%; and guanine, 3.0%. A simple and specific procedure for the fluorometric assay of guanine in nucleic acid hydrolyzates is reported.
