Field experi-ments have been conducted since 1953 to determine yield, sugar content, and productivity of photosynthesis after various techniques of planting. The increase in root yield was 97 metric cntr/ha by the square hole method, with 44.5 cm between the rows, and was 118-120 cntrAa with 60 cm between the rows. The yield of sugar was increased by 14.3 and 15.7-16.6 cntrAa, respectively. The accumulation of sugar during the course of the growth period following square hole sowing was more rapid during the period of accelerated growth, that is from the middle of July to the middle of Aug., while intensive root growth continued throughout the growth period. The decreased sugar content of roots was due to the fact that the absorption of nutrient substances such as N takes place more rapidly after square hole sowing. This leads to an accelerated accumulation of proteins in the roots, which is connected with intensified sugar metabolism and a decrease in its deposition in the roots. The total yield of sugar, however, was increased due to the higher root yield.
