Fundamental problems for laboratory research on Neisseria gonorrhoeae and gonococcal infection

Fundamental problems for laboratory research on Neisseria gonorrhoeae and gonococcal infection

American Journal of Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Venereal Diseases 32(2): 165-189

The author reviews the inadequacy of previous work on the gono-coccus and indicates the following guides to research: I. Problems pertaining to the biology of the gonococcus[long dash](1) Its enzyme systems, (2) its chemical fractionation and im-munologic studies of the fractions, (3) the quantitative and qualitative influence of chemical growth factors on the organism, especially in regard to colony type, enzyme systems, and virulence, (4) the quantitative and qualitative influence of physical factors upon the organism, especially in regard to colony type, enzyme systems, and virulence, (5) definition of colony type changes, as related to (1), (2), (3), and (4) above, and as correlated with virulence, and (6) chemical studies of the gonococcus "toxin;" and II. Problems pertaining to host response[long dash](1) The function of the polymor-phonuclear leucocytes, (2) the function of the mononuclear phagocytes, and (3) antibody response.
