Further studies on the intrapulmonary mixing of helium in normal and emphysematous subjects

A method for assessing how much of the lung is poorly ventilated. The "poorly ventilated space" was often absent in young normals and never exceeded a liter; whereas almost all patients with emphysema had a space of over a liter. "Elderly normal" subjects were intermediate in this respect.
