Furunculosis and pseudofurunculosis

Furunculosis and pseudofurunculosis

Pediatriia Moscow 2: 58-64

Both are caused by Staphylo-coccus aureus. Furunculosis (staphylodermia follicularis pro-funda necrotisans) involves the hair follicles and is seldom seen before sexual maturity, when the follicles complete their development. Younger children and infants used to develop pseudofurunculosis (staphylodermia sudoralis pro-funda) which involves the sweat glands. Pathology, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of both conditions are discussed. Incision is recommended in pseudofurunculosis; furunculosis should be treated conservatively, and ichthyol ointment continued after removal of necrotic core until healing of wound.
