Harvesting, processing and seeding native grasses in the central and northern Great Plains

Harvesting, processing and seeding native grasses in the central and northern Great Plains

Agron Jour 44(7): 378-383

The problem of meeting the demand for native grass seed, how to condition the seed for seeding, and how to adapt drills for proper sowing, has been answered, largely from experience, in learning (1) how to determine when a stand of grass is worth harvesting, the kind of harvester to use and how to adjust it, (2) how to handle harvested material for proper storage to avoid loss from spoilage, (3) how to adopt harvesting equipment for special grasses like buffalo grass, the bluestems, and lovegrasses, and (4) the technics and advantages of processing seeds with awns and hairy appendages; by the development and advantages of grass drills for seeding uncleaned, unprocessed, rough seed; and by airplane seeding in special cases.
