Hens hyper-immunized to fowl plague lay eggs containing virus-neutralizing antibodies exclusively in the yolks. The antibody concentration of the yolk corresponds to that of the blood of the hen. In the yolks of fertile eggs from hyperimmune hens, antibodies can be shown to exist in nearly undiminished concn. throughout the embryonic development. Explanted brain tissues of embryos from eggs containing antibodies proved refractory to infection with virus. Chicks from immune eggs showed absolute immunity to massive doses of virus during the first few days. They became susceptible in 26 to 30 days, proving the passive nature of their immunity. Active immunity developed only exceptionally. Hyperimmunized [male][male] transmit no immunity to offspring of normal hens, but will, when injected with virus, transmit fowl plague to normal hens during coitus, without themselves becoming sick.
