Increase in sugar content of nectar by treatment of seeds prior to sowing

Polygonum seeds were treated prior to sowing in the conditions of the Moscow oblast with (1) a boric acid solution (10 g/metric cntr) and (2) with wood ash extract (1.65 g/metric cntr). The control sowing was made with seeds soaked in water; in all cases the seeds were dried 5 days before sowing. Presowing treatment of Polygonum seeds with boric acid and ashes increased the amount of sugar in the flowers by 23.7 and 43.2% respectively as compared with the control crop. Frequency of bee visits increased by 24.2 and 32.6% and the yields of seeds, by 16.4 and 18.5% respectively.
