Influence of acid feeding on chemical composition of milk

Eight cows were fed a ration containing silage for 40 days, and then after a transition period of 15 days they were given a ration from which the silage had been removed. This silage contained a high percentage of organic acids (6.15-17.80% of the dry matter). The acid ration did not affect the quantity of lactose, fat, chlorine, nor the true acidity. There was an increase of total organic acids, but they were not in a free state. The percentage of Ca and of protein was reduced. The milk was not readily coagulated by rennin. Rats were fed the 2 kinds of milk for short periods; those receiving the acid milk gained less in weight and developed abnormalities in the composition of the bones.
