Influence of the exudate of Boletus variegatus on the dichotomous ramifications of isolated pine roots

Influence of the exudate of Boletus variegatus on the dichotomous ramifications of isolated pine roots

Physiol Plantarum 1(4): 390-400

Isolated growing roots of Pinus silvestris were cultured in the presence of one of the mycelial fungi Boletus variegatus, B. luteus, and Cenococcum graniforme. The Boletus spp. produced a considerable amt. of dichotomous ramification, or branching, mainly of the short roots. This phenomenon was not produced by the fungal hyphae. C. graniforme produced only sporadic branching. A soln. of the exudate prepd. from cultures of B. variegatus also produced marked dichotomous branching. It is considered likely that both Boletus spp. produce one or more substances which bring about this unusual branching in the pine roots.
