Inheritance of growth habit in winter and spring wheat hybrids

Three equal lots of F1 seed of 11 different crosses between spring and winter wheats, sown at Pullman, Washington, on Feb. 28, Apr. 4, and May 4, showed 3 types of results. All the 1st planting ripened normally by Sept. 24 as though fall sown. Segregates of the 2nd fell into 3 classes: (a) no winter plants, so that seemingly more than 3 factors for spring habit are involved; (b) 2.7-4.4% winter plants, whereas 1.6% would indicate a trihybrid; (c) 5.7-7.0% of winter plants, close to the 6.25% of a dihybrid. One cross in the (b) group, tested in F3, proved the correctness of a trihybrid hypothesis and that the 3 factors are of unequal value. The planting of May 4 showed a different type of segregation, not described. The results "show that we are dealing with a moving mean which changes with the season, being affected primarily by changes in temperature and the length of daylight." From the date of heading or maturity, one cannot predict with certainty what factors a given variety of spring wheat may posses.
