Inheritance of plant height and stem rust resistance in wheat Triticum aestivum L

Plant height, some of the components of plant height, and the inheritance of seedling reaction to stem rust races 11, 15B, and 29 were studied in a cross of Milam X [Norin 10 X (Nebraska 60 X Mediterranean-Hope, C.I. 12500)]. Heritability estimates for plant height were high, indicating that the character was genetically controlled and early generation selection would be feasible. Multiple regression analysis of the length of the 3rd and 1st internode below the peduncle on plant height was conducted. The multiple regression coefficient was highly significant and each regression was highly significant, indicating that these 2 internodes contributed to plant height. Resistance to race 11 of stem rust was dominant and inherited in the ratio 15 resistant to 1 susceptible. Resistance to race 15B of stem rust was dominant and inherited in the ratio 63 resistant to 1 susceptible. Failure of rust development on all lines tested with race 29 indicated that the parents contain common factors for resistance to this race.
