Inheritance of the mode of reaction to stem rust, particularly race 15B, and leaf rust in two crosses of vulgare wheats

Studies were made of the inheritance of seedling reaction to race 15B and certain other races of stem and leaf rusts, of field reaction to a collection of races of stem and leaf rusts, and of association between the different characters studied in the crosses, Frontana X Mida-Kenya 117A and Kenya 58-Newthatch X Frontana. The seedling reaction of the Kenya derivatives and progenies of their crosses with Frontana was influenced greatly by light and temperature. Seedling resistance to a single isolate of stem rust race 15B was conditioned by 3 genes in both the crosses, but the gene interactions were different in the 2 crosses. Some bio-types in a mixture of cultures of race 15B appeared to be more pathogenic than the "Abercrombie" isolate alone. Seedling reaction to each of the other races of stem rust 11, 17, 36, 38 and 56 and to races of leaf rust 5 and 15, appeared to be simply inherited. Leaf rust resistance of Frontana can be combined with seedling resistance to certain races, including 15B, of stem rust as well as with field resistance to a collection of races of stem rust.
