This shrimp was imported from Florida in 1958. The objective was to improve the food chain in the lower Colorado River. It entered the River from one of the 4 ponds it was experimentally introduced into and has established itself in a short section above Imperial Dam. Utilization of shrimp by fish in the River was observed in 1962. In 1963 shrimp were planted in 7 locations upriver from Imperial Dam.
