The most serious sugar beet diseases in this island are Sclerotium root rot, nematode root knot and crown root rot. The relationship between these diseases and sugar beet varieties, planting date, cropping season and soil type is discussed. Sclerotium root rot appears in the late growing stage of sugar beet, and infection may reach as high as 52.5%. Under different conditions of cropping seasons, planting dates and localities, the varietal differences of infection seemed to have no definite pattern. Serious infection was found in sandy loam soils; less in loam or clay soils. Because of later harvesting more serious infection was found in late planting plots than early ones. This may have been due to the fact that gradually increased atmospheric temperature from Feb. to May in the late growing stage of the sugar beet, combined with high humidity, favored development of Sclerotium root rot. Root knot incidence is not related to varieties, planting dates or cropping seasons; it depends on nematode population density. Crown root rot appears in the growing stage of sugar beet and its percentage of infection may reach 25.5. There seems to be no association of this disease with variety, planting date or cropping season. Some relation is considered to exist with soil types. There are no disease resistant varieties nor economical fungicides available at present for control of these 3 important diseases of beet in Taiwan.
