Virus was isolated from the lungs of 16 sheep affected with a slowly developing, fatal lung disease, known as maedi. The virus was neutralized by serum from maedi cheep. Attempts to isolate the agent from the lungs of 12 sheep from a maedi-free flock failed. The virus is ether sensitive, about 80 m[mu] in diameter. It grows slowly in tissue culture where it produces a cytopathic effect characterized by the formation of multinuclear giant cells. A possible etiological relationship with maedi is discussed.
