Laboratory observations of the bactericidal properties of alcoholic solutions of HC1

The bactericidal effect of 0.1-0.25% of HC1, prepared with 10-20% alcohol, is considerably higher than that of the equivalent HC1 concentration in aqueous solutions. The alcoholic solutions of HC1 act in the same degree in pure broth cultures as in cultures with the addition of heavy pus. The use of alcoholic solutions of HC1 for wound infection prophylaxis and for pre- operative scrubbing is recommended.
