Les barrages sexuels chez Lenzites betulina Fr

In certain culture plates where 2 compatible strains had been planted opposite one another, there was observed on the surface of the agar in the middle of the plate an area into which hyphae of neither strain would penetrate. Below the surface of the agar the mycelia mingled freely. It was previously concluded that the agents responsible for the "barrages" could traverse certain solid membranes such as glass; it now appears that the agents which cause the phenomenon are gaseous emanations, and that the presence in the mated haploid strains, of the mendelian factors b and b[image], is alone the cause of the "barrages" appearing. The factors a and a[image] are apparently not implicated.
