Light-Induced Recovery of Microorganisms from Ultraviolet Radiation Injury, with Special Reference to Escherichia Coli

Light-Induced Recovery of Microorganisms from Ultraviolet Radiation Injury, with Special Reference to Escherichia Coli

Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine 26(3): 189-199

The lethal action of u.-v. light (2537 A) on cells can be largely prevented by irradiation of ultraviolet-treated cells with suitable visible light. Several aspects of light-induced recovery, or photoreacti-vation, are reviewed, including its generality among various types of cells, loss in ability to photoreactivate under certain conditions, relation of ultraviolet-induced increased lag, to its lethal action, the relation of photoreactivation to ultraviolet-induced mutation, etc.
