Abstract
Phyllophora rubens and other Phyllophora species are described as agaroidophytes. They occur in great quantity in the Black Sea, where they are the basis for a Soviet agaroid industry. The phyllophoran is used in Russia in foods technology. The Phyllophora genera are some of the very few red algae with a high iodine content. In the USSR they are also used for the production of iodine.
