Mechanized thinning in jack pine saplings

Mechanized thinning in jack pine saplings

Jour Forest 55(3): 201-204

Dense Pinus banksiana sapling stands in Wisconsin were thinned by swathing the stands in both directions at about 5- to 6-foot intervals with a self-propelled 26-inch circular saw and finishing the work with hand-carried one-man saws equipped with 8- or 10-inch circular saws or with chain-saw heads. The average cost of $8.71 per acre represents a 50-60% reduction of costs compared with hand thinning.
