In experiments performed on small plots by the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow using radioactive phosphorus, superphosphate was applied at a depth of 18 to 22 cm, or 7 to 8 cm, in a dose of 3 centners/ha. During the first 2 weeks, shoots of oats of the first group assimilated P from superphosphate much more slowly than those of the second group, but later the assimilation process progressively accelerated with plant growth. At the end of the growth season, the plants of oats of the deep-application group contained 5 times as much P as those from the shallow-application group. In experiments with potatoes, the assimilation rates of P in 3 centners of superphosphate/ha were nearly the same, whether it was introduced at depth, or whether half the dosage was applied on the surface in hollows. Maximal absorption of P both from fertilizer and from soil was observed when a basic dose of superphosphate was applied both deeply and in small doses in rows of oats, or in potato sowing hollows. Corn absorbed P from organophosphorus and organophosphorus lime mixtures applied with plowing or into hollows, or combined to a greater extent than that applied using a "cultivator" machine.
