The Siberian crab apple and Ranetka purpurovaya were studied to determine the possibilities of using them as stocks for 12 varieties of apples. On 20 July one of the main roots of the tree was dug out and placed with all its branch roots in a retort filled with 50 ml of a Na2HP32O4 solution without detaching the root from the plant. Samples taken on 22 and 26 July from the lower and upper leaves of all shoots of the four lower branches and from extention shoots showed that the main bulk of the radioactive isotope entered the lower branch which was situated above the fed root and the extension shoot. The root system supplied more p32 to the aerial parts when the stock and scion were better matched.
