Morphological peculiarities of sturgeon under varying oxygen conditions

The effect of low O2 content on the development of sturgeon eggs was investigated at the Kura experimental sturgeon hatchery in Sept-Oct. 1957. In flowing water at 17[degree]C, mortality rates at 5.5 and 3.5 mg O2/1 were, respectively, 18 and 100% in comparison with 12% for controls kept at 9.5 mg O2/1. Larvae hatched at the lower On concentrations developed more slowly and gained weight less rapidly than controls. O2 uptake generally increased as development proceeded. Anatomical characteristics of embryos developing at an O2 concentration of 5.5 mg/1 in flowing water were similar to those of embryos developing at 9.5 mg O2/1 in still water. It is concluded that 02-saturated flowing water is an important factor in sturgeon egg development, and that 5.5 mg/1 is the minimal O2 concentration for the normal development of the majority of eggs. Internal and external structures of embryos at various stages of development are described, along with abnormalities caused by lack of O2.
