New methods in the biosynthetic production of antibiotics. II. Production of chlortetracycline by cultivation of a production strain on shredded grain

A new method using shredded barley and a strain of Streptomyces aureofaciens for production of chlortetracycline and vitamin B12 is described. One gram of the completed product contains about 1500-2000 [mu]g chlortetracyline and 0.02-0.05 ug vitamin B12. This method, which does not require the usual aseptic conditions and complicated fermentation equipment, was put into production in the State Farm Distilleries and is being introduced in a number of other production units.
