New methods of breeding perennial cross-pollinated plants

New methods of breeding perennial cross-pollinated plants

Trudy Zonal Inst Zernovovo Khoziaistva Necherno Zemnoi Polosy Sssr 13: 140-155

The following methods of breeding for winter resistance and longevity in red clover are recommended. By selection from mixed populations of heterozygous plants, lines are obtained which breed true for 1st year flowering, for the winter type or 2d year flowering, and for frost resistance in the climate in which they are grown. During this process, individual clones are tested over periods of 3-5 yrs., and intercrossing between plants having similar growth characteristics is carried out in isolation plots.
