Notes on plant virus diseases in South Africa. II. Die-back of tomatoes

Union S Africa Dept Agric And Forestry Sci Bull 182: 37-40

In 1935 an unfamiliar disease appeared in tomato fields of the Eastern Transvaal and became widespread, causing heavy crop losses. It was characterized by apical dieback, necrotic flecks in the upper leaves and streaks along the petioles and sterns, and greasy blotches on the fruit. Juice inoculations to tomato, tobacco, Nicotiana glutinosa, Solanum nigrum, and Datura readily produced infection, and indicated that 2 viruses were involved. On the basis of symptoms these were identified as common tobacco mosaic and the potato X virus. The disease is therefore similar to the mixed virus streak reported on tomatoes in Europe and N. America.
