I. An attempt is made to associate lateral asymmetry with the heterozygous condition. Just as the hybrid, through segregation of hereditary factors among its germ cells, produces offspring of different genetic types, so, by a similar process of qualitative division among somatic cells, asymmetry of characters in the hybrid organism is brought about. Thus the segregative process in the phylogenetic and ontogenetic field is essentially similar.[long dash]II. The way in which those changes in cell structure and function which constitute use acquirements are brought about are discussed. They are regarded as due to a process of variation and selection among intra-cellular units. The neuro-psychic response is compared with the response made by muscle, eplthelial, and other cells to changes in environmental stimuli.[long dash]III. The evidence which points to the occurrence of racial deterioration is reviewed. Attention is drawn to the increasing preservation and transmission of mental and physical defect which is going on in the population, partly through the wider scope of present day medical practice, and partly through social services and social legislation which is not sufficiently discriminating in character. The remedy lies in the application of genetic knowledge to social problems and human life.[long dash]IV and V. Certain aspects of the physiology of the red blood cell are discussed, and some of the ways in which it may be affected, chemically and physically, by certain changes in its environment.
