On the biology of Merulius lacry-mans and Coniophora cerebella

In mixed cultures of M. lacrymans and C. cerebella growth passed through 3 phases: (1) the mycelia of both spp. grow without interfering with each other, (2) a marked depression begins in the growth of the mycelium of C. cerebella, (3) the mycelium of M. lacrymans outgrows that of C. cerebella, causing a considerable depression of the latter. Under the influence of both fungi wood decay proceeds at the same rate as under the influence of only one. A moderate amount of O was necessary for growth of both spp. At reduced pressure (17 mm. Hg), M. lacrymans did not grow, and C. cerebella was retarded. 19-days' exposure to such conditions brought about the loss of viability in the former, but not in the latter. At a pressure of 33 mm. Hg M. lacrymans developed only half as rapidly as under normal conditions; C. cerebella was not affected by these conditions. The mycelium of M. lacrymans perished after 1 hr. at 40[degree] C, after 20 min. at 60[degree], and after 3 hrs. at [long dash]20[degree]. The mycelium of C. cerebella withstood these conditions, also 3 hrs. at [long dash]30[degree], perishing only at 60[degree]C. Fomes igniarius, F. fomentarius and Daedalea quercina were more resistant to high temps. than Polyporus destructor and Poria vaporaria. Wood infected with fungi and partially imbedded in concrete decayed even in the part surrounded by the latter, which showed that concrete does not retard fungal development. The mycelium of M. lacrymans penetrated concrete through its natural pores to a depth of 1 cm.
