If an area of forest is sampled with sufficient regard to its characteristics as providing an environment for the growth of trees, it is possible, if the various characteristics are estimated quantitatively, to detn. the relative influence of change in any one characteristic upon the growth of the trees. This is carried out by means of correlation analysis, examples of which are given. Significant correlations between mean height, and the independent factors in Mynydd Ddu Forest in the west of England are demonstrated.
