On the origin and development of reaction wood cells. 4. Proof of lignin distribution in the cell walls of compression wood through examination in UV light

The cell walls of normal and compression wood of Picea abies were examined for lignification of individual wall layers with the help of the Universal -microspectral photometer UMSP I of the Carl Zeiss Co. Microphoto-graphs and extinction curves reveal that the central layers and the primary wall of the normal wood contain much lignin. On the border between the primary and the secondary walls the lignin content of the wall substance drops suddenly. The lignin content in the whole secondary wall is almost constant. The strong absorption of UV light by the tertiary layer can be attributed to lignin only in part. The compression wood walls contain a strongly lignified central layer. The primary wall is extraordinarily wide and less strongly impregnated with lignin than the central layer. In the outer parts of the secondary wall the lignin content of the wall substance is very high but then falls off rather quickly. The main body of the secondary wall up to the lumen is not lignin free but contains about as much lignin as the secondary wall of a normal wood cell. There is no tertiary layer.
