Physical and chemical methods of estimating vitamin A in shark and saw fish liver oils

Comparison was made between the values for vit. A obtained by spectrophotometric and tintometric methods on 24 samples. The color obtained on the non-saponifiable fraction of the oil with the antimony trichloride reagent was on the avg. 1.60 times more intense than when whole oil was used for the test. For the non-saponifiable fraction, the avg. ratio [image] was 28.5. The avg. vit. A value was 13.600 and 8,000 I. U. per g. for shark (37 samples) and saw-fish (14 samples) liver oil respectively.
