Physical morphology of colour pattern of some domestic animals

Physical morphology of colour pattern of some domestic animals

Sci Papers Inst Phys And Cham Res [tokyo] 27(590): 263-274

In an attempt to get an insight into possible physical factors in the morphogenesis of color patterns of some domestic animals, a plece of linen, cut into the shape of the color area of a cat's skin, was sewed together to form a closed envelop. Examination of the systems of seam lines of such envelops revealed some statistical regularity in their topological relations similar to the cracks produced in a thin layer of solidified paraffin coated on a rubber balloon which was expanded by increasing the internal pressure. It is suggested that in the earliest stage of embryonal development a system of crack-like lines of discontinuity was produced on the surface of the cell group, and that in the subsequent development the ectoderm cells produced within the domain of the cracks were deprived of the faculty to produce the proper plgment, resulting in the formation of the characteristic color pattern.
