Physiopathological problems of hypertrophic gastropathy with giant folds Giant hypertrophy of the gastric mucosa, Liege, 1962

Physiopathological problems of hypertrophic gastropathy with giant folds Giant hypertrophy of the gastric mucosa, Liege, 1962

Acta Gastro Enterol Belgica 25(7): 468-513

The name "hypertrophic gastropathy with giant folds" seems to be well-adapted to our present state of knowledge. There is almost no fasting chlorhydric acid and its excretion rate is always low, but the buffering capacity is increased. This may be related to the histologic aspect of the mucosa. The widespread oedema of the giant hypertrophic gastritis is due to hypoproteinaemia (hyposerinaemia). This is due to a very important loss of serum albumin through the gastric mucosa. The mechanism of it is unknown. However albumin synthesis in the liver is not sufficient to restore the protein loss. The author exposes data from the literature about the technics which may detect this protein loss, in this and other diseases. Possible differences with the exsudative enteropathy are discussed.
