Piperazine hydrate in the treatment of enterobiasis

Patients (23) with enterobiasis were treated by piperazine hydrate emulsified in syrup (5 cc contained 250 mg of the drug). The treatment was evaluated by perianal swabs with cellulose adhesive tape from the 2d to the 15th day after stopping treatment. 4 or 5 examinations being made at different times. Dosage was 60 mg/kg of body weight, divided into 2 doses daily. The emulsion was dissolved in half a glass of water. Of the 23 patients treated, 18 received 2 series of treatments, each one lasting 7 days, with a 7-day interval; the remaining 5 patients received only one series of treatments. A cure was obtained in 21 cases. The drug gives a high percentage of cures without the necessity of local treatment or specific hygienic measures. In effective doses the drug does not produce toxic or side effects, it can be given readily to small children, and it is a low-priced drug.
