Plankton studies in the Lake Champlain watershed.

Plankton studies in the Lake Champlain watershed.

NEW YORK STATE CONSERV DEPT Suppl TO 19TH ANN REPT : p 146-163

Studies were made at 18 stations and at various times. Determinations were made af the temp, of the water, transparency of the water, and quantity and sp. of organisms present. The plankton was divided into "net plankton" and "nannoplankton" and the records for each are given. The largest lake, Champlain, was shallow and weedy at both ends but deeper and comparatively free of weeds in the middle portion. The temp, at a depth of 20-30 m. was 9-17[degree] C. in Aug.[long dash]and at a depth of 115 m. 6[degree]C. A colder but smaller lake is Lake Placid with a bottom temp, at 20-30 m. of 6.3-7.1[degree] C. The Saranac Lakes were also small but shallow and warmer. Lake Placid gave the highest transparency records while Saranac Lake was low in transparency, probably due to the large amount of plankton present.
