Procaine penicillin and interrupted penicillin treatment in Streptococcus agalactiae mastitis I. Procaine penicillin in the bovine udder. II. Therapy studies with procaine penicillin and calcium penicillin

Vet Rec 62(2): 11-14

Following injn. of 100,000 U. per quarter erf procalne penicillin, 7.34 U./ml. avg. were present 36 hrs. after infusion. Similar Ca penicillin infusions averaged only 1.81 U./ml. at 36 hrs. Procaine penicillin persisted for about 12 hrs. longer than Ca penicillin in lactating udders. In non-lactating udders procaine penicillin may persist for as long as 5 days after infusion of 100,000 U. per quarter. For therapeutic purpose against S. agalactiae 2 infusions of 100,000 U. of procaine penicillin per quarter at intervals of 72 hrs. resulted in somewhat better results than similar infusion of the Ca salt. In both cases bacteriological cures were obtained in over 90%.
