An analysis of I 584 first lactation records, from 45 bulls of the Charmoy A. I. center, was undertaken. The animals belonged mainly to the French Friesian (F. F. P. N.: 788 [female][female], 21 [male][male]) and the Normandy (NO.: 724 [female][female], 21 [male][male]) breeds. The mean and the limits including 2/3 of the data around the mean, for the protein (TA) and butterfat (TB) percent ge were: F.F.P.N. NO. TA p. 1000 31.0; 28.9[long dash]32.8 33.4; 31.1[long dash]35.3 TB p. 1000 35.9; 33.0[long dash]38.6 38.6; 35.3[long dash]41.9 The genetic standard deviation is lower for protein than butterfat contents (MA/MG = 0.84), it is also lower for protein percentage as compared to butterfat percentage (TA/TB : F.F.P.N. = 0.89; NO. = 0.60). By the use of partial correlations, corrected to constant milk yield, a phenotypic correlation of 0.57 was reestimated between butterfat and protein percentages the genetic correlation being over 0.67.
