Rate and date of seeding Kanred winter wheat and the relation of seeding date to dry-land foot rot at Akron, Colo

Planting winter wheat at different dates resulted in significant differences in yields on summer-fallow in eastern Colorado. Winter wheat should be planted between Sept. 1 and 15 to obtain the best yields on either summer-fallow or cornland. One peck of seed per acre was not sufficient for all conditions but 2 pecks were sufficient for both fallow and cornland; 3 pecks or more did not increase yields enough to justify the use of the additional seed. The effect of high temp. on the incidence of dry-land foot rot and the resulting effect of the disease on the plant is one of the main factors in reducing yields in the earlier plantings (August 15). Low temp. is the main factor in reducing yields in plantings made after Sept. 15. Other factors such as moisture and winter-killing may act independently of rates or dates of planting in reducing yields.
