Reactivation of Escherichia coli after treatment by U V rays. II. Photoreactivation of aqueous suspensions of irradiated bacteria

Reactivation of Escherichia coli after treatment by U V rays. II. Photoreactivation of aqueous suspensions of irradiated bacteria

Ann Inst Pasteur 100(2): 180-189

In a suspension of irradiated.E. coli solidified by freezing reactivation does not take place : this reactivation seems to depend upon the possibilities of encounter of the bacilli in a liquid medium. If variants of E. coli K12 resistant to different antibiotics (streptomycin and tetracyclin) and to different phages (T4 and T6) are mixed and this mixture is treated 1st by UV rays then by white light, a high percentage of bacilli resistant to both antibiotics but resistant to T6 only appear. There is no evidence of reactivation being due to conjugation or recombination of the irradiated bacilli.
