Recorded Dutch elm disease distribution in North America as of 1956

Plant Dis Reporter 41(7): 634-635

During 1956, cases of this disease were found in western and southeastern Virginia, as well as at new locations in Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky. For the first time, cultures of Ceratocystis ulmi (Buisman) Moreau were obtained from elms in Wisconsin, where 63 cases of the Dutch elm disease were discovered in the southeasternmost 6 counties. Many additional locations were established also in Illinois and Michigan, but the disease has not yet been found in Iowa and no further spread has been recorded in Missouri. A single diseased elm has been found for the first time on the island of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, off Cape Cod. The Dutch elm disease has not yet been found in New Brunswick, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Iowa, or Minnesota, all of which adjoin infected States or Provinces.
