Reduction of tetrazolium blue by epidermal leucoplasts in the presence or absence of carbon dioxide in light red light or dark red light 7

Reduction of tetrazolium blue by epidermal leucoplasts in the presence or absence of carbon dioxide in light red light or dark red light 7

C R Hebd Seances Acad Science Ser D Science Natur Paris 264(6): 828-829

Under conditions which do not permit photosynthesis, as in the absence of CO2 or under dark red light, epidermal leucoplasts of Echinodorus ranunculoides and Bacopa monniera reduce tetrazolium blue only slightly. In contrast, under light red light and in the presence of CO2 the reduction is considerable. Thus the role of photosynthesis in the reduction process is demonstrated cytologically. Nothing definite is known about the enzyme responsible for tetrazolium reduction, but it is suspected that it may be photosynthetic triphospho-pyridine nucleotide reductase.
