Reductive fission of lactose by sodium borohydride

Reductive fission of lactose by sodium borohydride

Chem And Indust [london] (40): 1064

Reduction of lactose with excess Na borohydride yielded sorbitol and an anhydro sugar besides the expected lactitol. The mechanism is believed to involve a reductive scission of the glycosidic linkage of the lactitol.
